The current series of EUMETSAT
geostationary satellites at 0 deg. longitude - analogue WEFAX
and digital HRI (PDUS) will end with Meteosat-7 when the new
MSG-1 all digital satellite takes over at 0 deg. between mid
and end of 2003.
When operational MSG-1 will be known as Meteosat-8 and will
transmit LRIT [Low Rate Image Transmission] and HRIT [High
Rate Image Transmission].
Meteosat-7 will continue the WEFAX and HRI
service in parallel to the new Meteosat-8 service till the
end of 2005 from 10 deg. W.
With these two satellites transmitting on the same downlink
frequencies at 10 deg. separation there is a possibility of
some co-channel interference to users of smaller than EUMETSAT
recommended antenna sizes [1.8 m for WEFAX and LRIT]. See
RIG Journal 68, page 64.
